ABOUT SAVANA
Savana Women Health Africa is a Uganda-based nonprofit organisation working to improve the health, dignity and wellbeing of women and girls through reproductive health education, menstrual health support, counselling and access to healthcare.
We believe every woman and girl deserves accurate information, appropriate support and the opportunity to make informed decisions about her health.
OUR STORY
Where it began
Savana began with a deeply personal understanding of how significantly women's health can affect a woman's life.
The idea was first conceived in 2020 by our founder, Christina, whose own experiences with women's health conditions and treatment created a desire to help other women and girls better understand their bodies and health.
The original vision was simple: to educate young girls about women's health and help ensure that a lack of menstrual products did not prevent them from attending school.
Plans were put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the vision remained. In April 2025, Savana Women's Health Africa was formally established in Uganda, a country where our founder had previously volunteered and developed strong community connections.
What began with a focus on menstrual health has since grown in response to the needs encountered through our work. Today, Savana works with girls and women across reproductive and sexual health education, menstrual health, counselling, healthcare referrals and other barriers affecting their health, safety and dignity.
WHY UGANDA?
Uganda has always held a special connection to Savana. Our founder, Christina, spent time volunteering in the country and developed relationships within local communities, making Uganda a natural place for Savana's work to begin.
Crucially, Savana's work on the ground is locally led. Our Country Director, Bernah, is based in Uganda and is a professional social worker with years of experience supporting vulnerable children and young people. Her experience and understanding of the communities we serve help ensure that Savana's programmes respond to the realities, challenges and needs of women and girls locally.
Savana combines a personal connection to Uganda with local knowledge, professional experience and community-led delivery.
